The Holocaust The Holocaust was a time period during World War II in which Adolf Hitler murdered millions of European Jewish citizens. Holocaust is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in 1933, believed that Germans were superior and Jewish people were inferior. They also believed that the Jewish people were a threat to German communities. During this time period, they also targeted other groups like Gypsies, the disabled, and some of the Slavic people. Other groups were prosecuted because of their political, religious, or behavioral backgrounds. "Jews" lived in countries that Nazi Germany would occupy or influence during World War II.
