The Holocaust
The Holocaust
The Holocaust was a time period during World War II in which Adolf Hitler murdered millions of European Jewish citizens. Holocaust is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in 1933, believed that Germans were superior and Jewish people were inferior. They also believed that the Jewish people were a threat to German communities. During this time period, they also targeted other groups like Gypsies, the disabled, and some of the Slavic people. Other groups were prosecuted because of their political, religious, or behavioral backgrounds.
"Jews" lived in countries that Nazi Germany would occupy or influence during World War II. By 1945, the Germans killed nearly two our of every three European Jewish citizens as part of the "Final Solution." The Final Solution was the Nazi policy that Hitler created to murder all the Jews of Europe. In the early years, the Nazis established concentration camps, and then in the later years they started incarcerating Jewish people in these camps.
\ In the final months of the war, SS guards moved camp inmates by train, often called "death marches," in an attempt to stop large numbers of prisoners. After German forces surrendered to the Allies, many of the Jewish citizens who survived got out of the camps and emigrated. A total of six million Jewish people were persecuted and murdered throughout the war. This was, and still is, a very tragic memory for us as a country.

I definitely agree with your statement, "This was, and still is, a very tragic memory for us as a country". It really is amazing and sad with how many innocent people were murdered. They were just used as scapegoats for Hitler's plan.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you because Hitler for sure used the jewish community as a way to boost people confidence in him as a successful leader. It is incredibly sad because they were innocent people that Hitler chose to label and torture.
