world war 1
World War One
World War I was a global war that started in Europe and lasted from 1914-1918. The four main causes of World War I was militarism, alliance system, imperialism, and nationalism. The immediate event that sparked the war was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.
Militarism was one of the causes because people believed military was a symbol of national power. Every country wanted the stronger military, so that they could win the war. If you had a weak military, people viewed your country as weak.
Another cause of the war was the alliance system. The countries had split into two different alliances. There was the central powers, which was Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire. We also had allied powers, which was France, Russia, and England. The point of an ally was to have people on your side that served a common purpose in the war. The problem that resulted in this was secret alliances. The U.S. decided to stay neutral in the beginning of the war and not get involved. The alliances were a "ticking time bomb." Once Archduke was assassinated Austria-Hungary immediately declared war.
Imperialism was also a cause of world war one. Imperialism was when stronger nations wanted to take over weaker nations. Once the U.S. got involved in the war we became an imperialist nation. Most countries wanted to take over smaller countries for their economy and also many other reasons. Imperialism led to the desire to have as much territory as possible, which caused wars to break out between countries. Before World War I, Africa and parts of Asia were points of contention among the European countries. Because of the raw materials these areas could provide, tensions around these areas ran high. The increasing competition and need for greater empires led to an increase in confrontation that helped set the war into place.
The last main cause of the war was nationalism. So many countries had strong pride in their own country. Strong pride led to doing things that effected other nations. When you have a strong pride in your country you will do anything to fight for your country, including killing a lot of men.

I think alliances were probably the biggest factors that led to the war. If alliances hadn't existed then all these different countries would have never been involved and we there wouldn't have been a big jumble of countries fighting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that and I think that nationalism played hand in hand with alliances because countries wanted to show case their strengthens and when paired with other countries it just made things worse. Do you think that when countries were creating the bonds that formed into alliances they choose nations with little or a lot of nationalism?
ReplyDeleteDo you think any of the main factors that led to the War had any bigger part than the others? Or do you think they contributed equally to the start of War?
