3 Life Lessons from History

3 Life Lessons from History The way you treat people can have a much larger affect then what you think. It is important to always respect and care for everyone around you no matter who they are because they are a human just like you. The impact of ones action could be so great that it causes a retaliation just like the Native Americans did. Another extremely important thing is honesty, especially about circumstances that don't only effect you. This is seen in US history as presidents tried to sneak around and hid key details for their own benefit. This led to the nation distrusting its leaders and created chaos among the nation. Lastly keeping peace and a level head is extremely important when put into stressful situations. Once the peace is broken it is hard to bring it back and typically nothing good comes out of violence. War is a prime example of this because in the end everyone has lost something and people have died instead of using communication skills to talk it o...

the cold war

The Cold War               The Cold War was a rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted for much of the second half of the 20th century. The Cold war was waged on political, economic, and propaganda fronts and had only limited recourse to weapons. This war resulted in suspicions, heightened tensions, and a series of international incidents. These incidents brought our worlds superpowers into disaster. No single party was entirely to blame for the Cold war.               During World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union fought together as allies. They had a very tense relationship, and it led to many disagreements. The Cuban missile crisis showed that neither the United States nor the Soviet Union were ready to use nuclear weapons for fear of the other's retaliation. Americans had always been worried about Soviet communism and concerned about Stalin's government power. After ...

The Holocaust

The Holocaust              The Holocaust was a time period during World War II in which Adolf Hitler murdered millions of European Jewish citizens. Holocaust is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in 1933, believed that Germans were superior and Jewish people were inferior. They also believed that the Jewish people were a threat to German communities. During this time period, they also targeted other groups like Gypsies, the disabled, and some of the Slavic people. Other groups were prosecuted because of their political, religious, or behavioral backgrounds.              "Jews" lived in countries that Nazi Germany would occupy or influence during World War II. By 1945, the Germans killed nearly two our of every three European Jewish citizens as part of the "Final Solution." The Final Solution was the Nazi policy that Hitler created to murder all the Jews ...

Leisure Time

Image
Leisure Time             After World War I, research and development propelled the United States and other industrial countries into the age of technology. Advances in transportation, communication, and manufacturing allowed consumers to buy cars, radios, and home appliances, which they saw advertised in magazines and newspapers.            Times have really changed from the 1920's to today. Many people today have different ways they spend their free time then they would've in the 1920's. Also, they didn't really have as much free time as we do now because of the jobs and many kids were expected to help around the house more.         Outside the home, popular entertainment in the 1920s meant going to the movies. Movies were the most popular leisure attraction of the times, making stars out of Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson, and Mary Pickford.    Professional sport...

world war 1

World War One          World War I was a global war that started in Europe and lasted from 1914-1918. The four main causes of World War I was militarism, alliance system, imperialism, and nationalism. The immediate event that sparked the war was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.           Militarism was one of the causes because people believed military was a symbol of national power. Every country wanted the stronger military, so that they could win the war. If you had a weak military, people viewed your country as weak.           Another cause of the war was the alliance system. The countries had split into two different alliances. There was the central powers, which was Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire. We also had allied powers, which was France, Russia, and England. The point of an ally was to have people on your side that served a common purpose in the war. The...

Modern Muckrakers

Image
Modern Day Muckrakers            The term muckraker was used during the Progressive Era in order to characterize reform-minded American journalists who attacked established institutions and leaders as corrupt. They were able to do this  by writing stories on the many  different issues of the Progressive Era and putting them in local newspapers for everyone to see. In todays modern times you can still see people who voice their opinions and concerns about society.             An example of a modern day muckraker is Jason Horowitz with  The New York Times.  He is the Rome  bureau chief of The Times, covering Italy, the Vatican, Greece and other parts of Southern Europe. He previously covered the 2016 presidential campaign, the Obama administration and Congress, with an emphasis on political profiles and features.             Jason Horowitz covered a story in...
